Spotting can be confusing—especially if you’re not sure whether your period is starting or if it could be an early sign of pregnancy. Here’s a quick Q&A to help you understand implantation bleeding vs. period bleeding and when to book a free pregnancy test appointment.

Q: What is implantation bleeding?

A: Implantation bleeding is light spotting that can happen when a fertilized egg attaches to the lining of the uterus. It can be one of the earliest signs of pregnancy for some women (but not everyone experiences it).

Q: When does implantation bleeding happen?

A: It usually happens about 6–12 days after ovulation or conception, often a few days before your expected period. That’s why it’s easy to mistake it for an early period.

Q: What does implantation bleeding look like?

A: Implantation bleeding is typically:

  • Light spotting (not a full flow)

  • Pink, light red, or brown

  • On and off, not steadily heavy

  • Lasting a few hours to 1–2 days

Q: How is period bleeding different?

A: Period bleeding usually:

  • Starts light but becomes heavier

  • Coloration is bright red or darker red

  • Includes a steady flow

  • Often comes with stronger cramping and other PMS symptoms

  • Lasts 3–7 days

While your period may be predictable, some periods can be unusually light at times. Women can mistake implantation bleeding for a period. By the time they take a pregnancy test, they are actually much further along than they thought. This is why an ultrasound is the most accurate, safe way to date a pregnancy - not an online due date calculator. If you are pregnant and considering the abortion pill, book an ultrasound to verify how far along you are and what options are available for you. The abortion pill is only an early termination method.

Q: Can implantation bleeding have cramps?

A: Yes, some women feel mild cramping with implantation bleeding, but it’s usually lighter than typical period cramps.

Q: How heavy is too heavy to be implantation bleeding?

A: If you need a pad or tampon because the bleeding is heavy or filling, it’s more likely a period (or something else). Implantation bleeding is usually too light to soak a pad.

Q: Can I take a pregnancy test during implantation bleeding?

A: You can, but it may be too early for an accurate result. For the best accuracy:

  • Test on or after your missed period

  • Or test 2–3 days after the spotting stops

  • Use first-morning urine for the strongest hormone levels

Q: What if I’m still not sure what the bleeding is?

A: That’s very common. Cycle timing can vary, and spotting can happen for many reasons. If you’re unsure, a medical-grade pregnancy test and, if needed, an ultrasound can provide clarity.
